Being forstered in Middle TN
Everyone, please say hello to Miss Shortie. Shortie has had a rough couple of weeks. She was owned and loved for her whole life by her human daddy. Then, recently, dad had a stroke and became unable to take care of himself. He kept her for as long as he could, but when he had to go into assisted living, he had to make a very tough decision. He called the shelter to see if they knew of anyone who might give her a good home because he emphatically did NOT want to dump her at any shelter. Luckily, they gave him my number and after a very emotional phone conversation, it was decided that he would surrender her to AADR. The next day, here he came leaning on his walker with little Shortie in his other arm. Tears running down his face, he kept giving her kisses and kept saying "I just want her to be loved. She's always been loved...she don't know no different." It took me a minute to understand what he was saying because his voice was slurred due to the stroke. It was a heartwrenching day and everyone was in tears. I swore to him we would find her the perfect family who would love her forever and that I would let him know when we did. Now, about Shortie herself. She is one of the sweetest dachshunds I have ever had the pleasure to meet. I have seen zero aggression from her toward anything. She loves other dogs, cats, and is fine with my birds. She likes men, women, and children of all ages. Her daddy said his granddaughter has cerebral palsy and that Shortie would just lay on her lap and go to sleep. The wheelchair didn't bother her at all, nor did the fact that the child was handicapped. I think she would be a great therapy dog...she surely has the temperament for it. Unfortunately, her mouth had not been very well cared for and at her dental she lost all of her teeth...so no hard food for her. Her little tongue sticks out the side of her mouth and it is so cute! She's otherwise in good health, spayed, up to date on all vaccinations and on Heartworm prevention and Frontline. She is housebroken but most likely will have a few accidents until she learns the routine. Please, I know that special someone is just waiting for little Shortie to come join your family. She's been through so much....she deserves to be pampered the rest of her life. Like her daddy said "She's always been loved...she don't know no different." WE WILL NOT SHIP OUR DOGS CARGO, TOO MANY HORROR TALES HAVE HAPPENED FOR US TO FEEL COMFORTABLE DOING THIS. IF WE CAN'T TRANSPORT BY LAND THEN YOU'LL HAVE TO FLY TO THE CITY THAT THE DOG IS BEING FOSTERED IN TO GET HIM/HER. Out of state and Canadian adoptions are welcome. We have several transporters that for a fee will bring the dog as close to you as possible up the Eastern seaboard or down to FLORDIA.

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
