BIO:  Pal has been in foster care since the last week of July.  He was owner surrendered.  Pal’s past owner found him as a stray about 9 years ago and after being unable to find his owner, they kept him as theirs.  Unfortunately for Pal, he was the victim of a very common scenario... the owners had children and Pal was no longer “conducive” to their lifestyle.  He has been vetted and given a clean bill of health.  His dental did result in 5 simple extractions and 3 sectional extractions as well as a good cleaning.

Since being here in his foster home in Vermont, Pal has shown that he is an extremely smart, loving, and independent pup.  DO NOT let his age dissuade you, he is a very young and playful 10!  He has many years left in him.  He knows his name very well and listens to commands incredibly well.  The only hard-headed issues result from loud sustained noises (lawn mowers, motorcycles, heavy traffic, trains, vacuum cleaners, etc.) that he must bark at without regards to commands.  The only way to calm him is to remove him from the situation.  He sleeps very well in a crate and is okay with just lounging around all day in a home that has working humans.  He has interacted very well with our Dachshund as well as one other male foster Dachshund.  He loves walking around with a squeaky toy in his mouth as well as playing his puzzle game to get treats.  Pal would love to have a fenced-in yard, but if he can't, he MUST be on a leash at all times.  He would not be a good dog for an apartment.

Pal is a GREAT dog!  Submit your application quickly because he won't be available for long.  If you have any questions about him, please drop us an email and we will contact you as soon as we can.  We'd love to tell you all about him!

Good with Dogs, Good with Older/Considerate Kids Only, Good with Adults, Leashtrained, Cratetrained, Likes to play with toys

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
