Lucy came to AADR after her previous owners abandoned her, and the neighbors took her in. It's their loss because Lucy is a very sweet and loving girl. She loves to snuggle up in your lap, and gives lots of kisses. Lucy does have some separation anxiety which should be expected, so she is not fond of her crate. That is something we are working on. Lucy gets along well with her foster brothers and sisters both four legged and two. She loves to take long naps on the back porch in a sunny spot, and occasionally will chase the trespassing squirrels. Lucy is a little overweight and we are working on getting her the exercise she needs to slim down. She doesn't beg for table scraps and isn't your typical "eat everything" dachshund. Her weight issues seem to be due to a lack of exercise. Lucy has had very few accidents since arriving at her foster home, and is improving daily. She is a little shy at first, but quickly warms up to new people and then becomes the center of attention. She recently went to the vet for a dental cleaning and blood work and was a favorite patient of theirs. Lucy would do well with a playmate or as a single child. She gets along with older calmer children as well.
We will not adopt into the state of CT or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states. If you have an issue with this you need to take this up with your legislatures. We are working hard to get approved to bring dogs into the state of NH and until that happens we can not adopt to anyone in that state either.
More about Lucy...AR
Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
