Happy Tales

Every one of these Dachshunds has been rescued by an angel...

Harley's Brave Journey   Harley's Story is a great inspiration to AADR because it shows that no matter how desperate the situation, saving one life makes the ultimate difference. DeeAnn, Harley's foster mom, has included her personal account with Harley's amazing story and where he is now.Harley was found homeless and sick. He only had a 50% chance of survival. Now he is living a life of true happiness and contentment. Read More...

Saban...NC

George (Saban, we changed his name) is doing wonderful!! He learned his new name within the first week!! He's a very smart boy, & eager to please. He caught on to our schedule & routines within the first couple of days. > George is incredibly loving & affectionate--- he loves cuddling!! He climbs up your chest, stares lovingly into your eyes, & the lays his head down & goes to sleep. He also loves playing!! My daughters will throw a ball/toy for him nonstop & he excitedly plays fetch. (He's a bit stubborn on releasing the toy, he's working on that haha) George instantly connected with our other mini Doxie, Daisey. She is 9, & we've had her since she was a pup. She is quite spoiled to say the least, so we expected her to need some time to adjust to George. But much to our surprise, they got along instantly. It was only day #2 of George living with us & he was cuddled up next to Daisey sharing her bed. He's a good man in knowing that when Daisey isn't wanting him near her, he goes in his own bed, or finds something else to do. (We women can have our mood swings haha) He adores going for his walks. He is very friendly with dogs & humans. He let's his human sisters hold the leash now when we walk, at first he'd just stand there & not walk if I wasn't holding it. George has stolen the hearts of our entire family. I honestly feel that fate brought us together, & he has completed our family. People say that rescuing a dog changes you. It's so very true! George has filled a void that I didn't even know was missing. Daisey loves him, & they have formed a strong bond. We are so grateful to have found George! And we are incredibly thankful for AADR! We are total advocates now for adopting over buying!! Thank You! Maria M

June...PA

June, now Lucy, is doing great! She is such an easygoing, lovable dog. She has adjusted well to our home and has formed a good bond with our 5 year old dachshund Roxi. We love her and could not be happier that we found her.

Riley...PA

Oh where to begin?!? I can't believe it has been over 2 months that we have had Reilly and nearly a year that we have had Maggie (Morgan) ! Although Reilly is definitely Bill's dog, he has warmed up to me nicely. If Bill is in the cellar, Reilly sits with his nose pressed to the cellar door. If Bill is outside, Reilly's nose is pressed against the storm door. No matter where Bill is, Reilly's nose is pressed to the door separating them! Reilly is beginning to warm up to me. He will climb up in my lap. He allows me to feed him, walk him, and pet him. If someone approaches us on a walk, he will run to me to protect him from the offending human. He actually allows me to pick him up! That was a shocker! Bessie was rescued as a puppy and has been with us for over 5 years now. She is the alpha, and does not hesitate to let the others know! She has started sharing Bill’s lap with Reilly, and sharing her dog bed with both Reilly and Maggie. SIX MONTH UPDATE: It has been over six months since he joined our family…time flies! As you know, Reilly is Bill’s dog without question. Reilly and I have been building our relationship and our trust through a slow, but positive, process. As I told you in our last installment; when Bill is not available, Reilly allows me to feed him, pet him, play with him, apply his harness/leash, and walk him. We have been working on his trust issues very slowly, and on his terms. Today Reilly and I had a major breakthrough; he allowed me to cradle on his back and rub his belly. It only lasted about 10 seconds, but his trust is increasing. He has also begun to generalize his trust to people he meets on our walks. He has been cautiously approaching our neighbors and allowing them to greet him, and sometimes, pet him. He is blossoming into a wonderful little dog! I am hoping that by the end of the summer, he will be able to accompany us to a neighborhood barbeque and be comfortable in that environment with all those people. I’ll let you know! As always, please feel free to use this e-mail to update Riley’s success story page. I want everyone to know what a great job AADR does in getting these pups ready to go to their forever homes, and giving the adoptive families the information, tips, and tools we need to have a successful relationship with our new family members. We are so fortunate to have found Maggie and Reilly through AADR! They both have fit into our family very well, and they both have won-over Bessie (for the most part). I have attached two photos (first photo under Morgan). The one is of Maggie and her “puppies”, and the other is of the three of them in the dog bed. Bessie is red and up front, Maggie is black and tan on the left, and Reilly is the red in the back. Please feel free to share this e-mail with the AADR community. Anne

Max #9...IN

Today is Max's 1 year anniversary of his gotcha day. Max is a sweet little dog. He adjusted well to living with me and he is a joy everyday. He loves to sit on my lap. He is well mannered which he learned from his foster mom. He still sleeps in his crate at night. He does new funny things everyday. The vet says he is a very fit little guy. He goes to doggie daycare during the week when I work. He loves it and his new little friend there is a puppy and Max is worn out when we get home. I think he believes that he too is a puppy. So he gets a workout everyday besides his walks. He was the center of attention when he got to walk with me in the Veteran's Day parade last year. He's such a good boy. He has one favorite toy which he is obsessed with. We can him dougie the dragon. He won't play with any of his other toys. Sometime he carries it on walks. Thank you for all the work AADR does. I always tell Max that I'm so happy that he decided to come live with me. I love him so much. Again thank you.

Bella #10 & Bo#5..VA

Bella was actually adopted along with her brother, Bo and they are Chiweenies. We love them so much! They are doing great! Just took them to the vet today for a lyme disease booster shot and they weigh in at 16.4 lb (Bo) and 12.6 lb (Bella). When they came to us in April they were 7 and 4 pounds. Here is the latest picture of them
