HOUSETRAINED: Yes

CRATE TRAINED: Yes, but he cannot be left alone. He can be crated at night to prevent him from climbing into bed with his humans and other times if needed as long as someone is home with him. He becomes destructive if left home alone in a crate.

LEASH TRAINED: Yes

SPECIAL NEEDS: Sammy has some problems with separation anxiety. He tolerates being crated as long as he is not left alone. He can be left at home outside a crate as long as he is with other dogs. He will not dig out of a secure fence area as long as he has other dogs to keep him company. Sammy does not like being alone. Because of the level of separation anxiety, he will most likely need a home where someone is home most of the time during the day.

Sammy also has some reactive issues. He does not like having his back feet or back end touched or grabbed. He is not fond of being picked up but will allow being picked up when supported properly under his chest in order to be placed in a harness and secured in a car seat. Talking to him in a calm, soothing voice while handling him helps to reduce negative/fear reactions. He also reacts when being toweled off after getting wet.

HOME W/ SMALL CHILDREN: No, he has a bite history with small children.

HOME W/ OTHER DOGS: Sammy loves, Loves, LOVES other dogs!   MALE:   Loves 'em!    FEMALE: Loves 'em!  Sammy can be a little instigator in his excitement when he meets and greets new dogs. He is also quite the talker and tends to go charging at anyone new, nose and mouth first! As a result, it is best to keep him on a leash and keep him walking when he greets his people. Greeting big dogs this way is his biggest problem. The problem with charging up to play with them is getting stepped on. He is a bold little guy and hasn't figured out that running underneath Labradors will get you stepped on! Little dogs, especially other Dachshunds, don't seem to mind him charging up. He goes berserk for other dogs his size. He would love to be a part of a pack of mini Dachshunds!

HOME W/ CATS: Good with cats.

BIO:

Sammy is a bold little guy who is full of energy. He loves to play and talk and hang out with his foster pack. Sammy has spent most of his 3 years chained up in a backyard all by himself so he is really enjoying the Pack Life, even if the other pack members are German Short Haired Pointers, a Labrador, a TN Brown dog, and a couple of cats. Sammy the Shortleg has learned to run with the big dogs and sleep with the kitties and that's fine by him! He loves starting his day patrolling the backyard and taking long pack walks in the park. He doesn't require 3 to 4 miles a day but because the pack goes, he goes too. As a matter of fact, he likes to lead them.

He is a loyal little man and loves being near his human! Given the opportunity to be off lead, he doesn't stray far but he is also quite the little hunter. He enjoyed a rousing hunt when one of the cats brought a live rat into the house and let it go. After seeing Sammy's hunting skills in action, I really had to think about whether I should keep him and get rid of the cat. I'm still thinking! However, Sammy would much rather be around smaller dogs. He has tried making friends with the chiweenie next door, although Miss Sassy is having none of it.

He loves car travel. He would make an excellent wingman for anyone needing a companion to ride shotgun. He loves playing fetch and tug of war. He does not resource guard. He shares his toys with the other dogs. He is very good with food. He waits patiently for his bowl to be filled and has no problems eating around the other dogs. He does have to be reminded, as with most dogs, not to browse in other folks bowls. He sits patiently for treats and is very polite in how he takes them. Sammy has come a long way from when I first met him and he would love find a forever home with his kind of people! If you are interested, please contact me at lacompton71@gmail.com.

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
