Update 10/11/15:

Velvet is doing quite well in her foster home. She is used to, and now is excited for, her morning walks (and all other walks in between!). Her weight is down almost to where it needs to be at 14 pounds. She is now chasing squirrels around the apartment complex and she is on constant alert with her tail up in the air and her nose to the ground. She is getting her strength back and her energy and youthfulness has blossomed because of her diet and exercise routine. She is wonderful to have around the apartment and will sit with you and watch TV or follow you around while you do your day to day routine. While she is still very food driven, she knows not to beckon for attention at the dinner table (watch your plates on the coffee table). Her foster dad still feels she would do well as the only dog in a home, but he is working on socializing her with other dogs at the dog park.

Velvet’s potty routine is still a work in progress and sometimes she has accidents inside her crate (#1 only). Her foster dad thinks she would do well with a doggy door as he suspects she was trained with puppy pads or was never trained to use the bathroom properly. She would do well as an apartment dog, but she loves to be outside. She is a very sweet girl that deserves a loving forever home!

BIO (on 9/13/15):  Velvet came from a northern Alabama shelter where she was turned in by her owner, no reason given or we weren’t told. When she came to us she was very scared and confused but now that she has settled in, she’s gotten that confused look off her face. She is quite friendly to her humans and tolerates her foster siblings. We feel she would be better as an only pet because she does not like the confusion when younger fosters are trying to play and doesn’t like to be disturbed when she is sleeping. She is fine with a doggie bed to sleep on or on your lap during your down time. We have been working on her weight and in the last two weeks she has lost at least a couple pounds and will only need to lose a couple more before she’ll be at the ideal weight. She will need a regular exercise program if she ends up being an apartment dog so that she doesn’t put the weight back.

Please stay tuned for more updates as we continue to learn her personality…

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
