BIO:  Sweet Bonnie!  When you go to pick Bonnie up, she "jumps" a little to help. She had been an elderly mans special pet, and perhaps she learned to "help" him pick her up.  It was a sad and confusing situation for sweet Bonnie, ending up at a busy and overwhelmed animal shelter after her owner went in the nursing home and no one in the family wanted her- even though she is a perfect lady.  (They kept her outside until she was surrendered).  She had a full load of intestinal worms and looked so sad.  She's been getting lots of rest, good food and love and in her foster home, and she has blossomed into a loving, playful girl!    

Bonnie is pigeon-toed, and walks with an uneven gait.  The x-ray showed that her uneven walk is most likely congenital (born with it) and not the result of an accident.  So her cute "twisty" walk should not be an issue if she is kept from stairs and jumping.      

She waits to be invited in the door, and isn't a big barker. She is a calm, gentle- spirited dog who likes to be with people and lay around with the other pets.  She is easily corrected and wants to please.  We suspect one of her Dachshund parents was long-haired, because she has a soft, thick, smooth coat (squishy wrinkles like a Shar-Pei!).  She's not a puppy, we estimate about 7 yrs. old, but she's still frisky.   Bonnie is a very long Dachshund with precious big feet.  She doesn't change direction quickly, so an easy-going home would be best (she has loved the kids in her foster home and the friends who come over to play.)  Bonnie needs a home with very few stairs.

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
