UPDATE, 7-1-15:

Blu has come such a long way since he has come to live with us! He is a Doxy that is full of life, energy, and love. Getting home from work every day to Blu’s wagging tail (more his entire body than just his tail), “excited to see you” yap, and love filled gaze with his one blue eye and one brown eye followed up with tons of kisses that are certainly all you can handle. He loves his walks and gets so excited when his harness is shown to him. He still hasn’t gotten over his large dog dislike (he will bark a lot whenever they come near him). He has learned to stop barking when he is spoken to but it turns into a slight grumble to ensure that he gets the last word. When new people come to the house it sometimes takes him a little while to get used to them, but once he does he is very welcoming to them. The best home possible for Blu would be a family that is very active and can keep up with his energetic personality. Children would be ok if they were over the age of ten. He is 100% house trained and loves the use of the dog door therefore he would certainly need a fenced in yard that he could have his freedom to run around and burn off his energy. Blu has his own Facebook page that his new family could certainly keep up if they desired. He has a lot of followers.

Please feel free to look at pictures and follow me at Aadr Blu on Facebook.

Hello everyone…my name is Blu. Is it because I have one blue eye? I can only assume that “may” have something to do with it. But…let me look at you with it and you will understand why it receives so much attention. What can I say?...I’m adorable!

Let me address some things that I have been accused of in previous bio’s.

1) Yes…I don’t get along with dogs that are bigger than me. They scare me and I do whatever I can to intimidate them. Most of the times it works. They leave me alone, and I leave them alone.  Any dog my size, I get along with. As I dictate this to my foster dad I am sitting on top of my step-brother and foster brother (which are also Dachshunds).

2) Yes….I do have tendencies to nip. Is it an aggressive nip?...ask my foster dad. I’ll bet he tells you that it’s not. He’ll tell you that if you play with me, I’m going to play with you at the same level. I have been known to kiss and kiss and kiss which may lead to a nip on the nose or ear but they are certainly gentle and not meant to injure. Those are the easiest things to get a hold of. That is why everyone tells me that I also need to stay away from small children. If they’re 10 or older “and” understand that I have boundaries, and that things like: ear pulling, excessive yelling, running toward me, and all those crazy things kids don’t understand about us smaller breed dogs are not ok with me.

Now that I’ve cleared that up, I will now turn it over to my foster dad for his input. Sincerely – Blu

Thank you Blu. What else can I say that he hasn’t already said? Blu is such a good boy. He has really come out of his shell since he came to live with us. Every morning he is always there to wake you up with wonderful kisses. He is 100% house trained and loves that he has the freedom to a fenced in yard with full access to a doggie door. He is not a big fan of a kennel, but is kennel trained.  He would certainly prefer sleeping in the big bed with his people. He is the first one to meet you when you get home with the cutest little bark, waggling tail, and hop into your lap for a ton of kisses. He certainly has an ability put a smile on your face even after the toughest day at work. As with every foster dog we have had, Blu is an adorable and loving dog that is ready to begin the happiest years of his life and is in search of the right family that is prepared for him to make them happy.

Blu came to us from a shelter in Athens, AL where he was turned in by his owner who said he didn’t get along with the other dog. He did not have him very long so we are not sure what was happening.

Blu was a little on the shy side when he first came into the foster home but we gave him his space and he warmed quickly. He’s fine with the other dogs in the foster home, both male and female. He’s learning to play with the other dogs - we aren’t sure he ever had anyone to play with in his previous homes.

He loves lap time but will also sleep in a doggie bed too. We’ve not let him sleep in the big bed but I’m pretty sure that wouldn’t be an issue for him either. He is doing great at going out to potty and loves being out in the fenced in yard.

He is a bit of a barker so he’d not make a good apartment dog but if you need a dog to alert you to activity in your yard, then he’d make a great watch dog for you.

Consider giving him a forever home so he won’t be homeless again!

Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
