BIO: Little Hazel spent the first 4 years of her life living outside in a small pen. Fortunately her owners realized that this was not a good situation and brought her to the animal shelter who contacted AADR. Hazel is a very sweet little lady, but has not had much life experience. She is getting used to being an indoor dog and has learned to walk on a leash. At first she runs from people, but is starting to be braver and approach. Her new family will have to be patient with her and earn her trust. When she is nervous she runs around in circles. Once you catch her she will sit quietly in your lap and enjoy the attention.
Hazel gets along fine with other dogs and when introduced to a few cats she just ignored them. She would probably do well with another friendly small dog that can show her that people are okay. She will need a quiet household because loud noises and sudden movements frighten her. She would not do well with young children only because they would scare her.
At night Hazel sleeps quietly in a crate. During the day she stays in a gated area. After just a week, she is progressing very well with her housebreaking. If left for extended periods she will use a pee pad.
If you have the patience to help Hazel blossom into the wonderful little dog she was meant to be, submit your application today!

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
