BIO: Hershel is a lovely young guy who's family didn't have time for him. They did take the time to train him well. He is housebroken, crate trained, walks well on a leash, and knows how to sit. He is a little shy with new people, but it doesn't take long for him to warm up to you. He was a little worried when he met the dogs in his foster home, but once he realized he could play with them, he was thrilled. Hersh likes to play chase and then nap in a dog bed or chew on a dog toy.
Although Hershel had been an only dog he would probably be happiest with a dog buddy to play with. He would enjoy a fenced yard, but would be okay with frequent leash walks and an occasional trip to the dog park. Hershel lived with children, so would be good with children would are old enough to understand that they must be gentle with him. He has not been around cats, but does get excited when he sees them on walks.
If you are looking for a happy and handsome young pal, Hershel is your man!
More about Hershel.....UT
Good with Dogs, Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
