BIO:
Persimmon is a precious little lady who was found as a stray. When she arrived she was missing hair and had irritated skin. With some good quality food and TLC she is looking and feeling much better. Persimmon must have been heavier at some point because her skin is a little baggy. She could still probably lose a pound or 2. She has low thyroid and is taking an inexpensive daily medication and needs to have a blood test once or twice a year to check her thyroid levels. She also has an eye that gets dry and irritated sometimes. For that, simple over the counter eye drops keep her feeling good. Simmy recently had her teeth cleaned and they are all white and shiny.
Persimmon is a sweet girl and has liked everyone she's met. She enjoys dog toys and walks well on a leash. She will even chase a toy sometimes, but doesn't usually bring it back. She can be whiny when she wants something, but once you figure out what it is she is fine; usually she wants a blanket, to sit with you, or to go outside. She will use a pee pad if nobody is around to take her out. Because she is so well behaved Simmy is allowed to roam free in a dog safe area of the house when no people are home. She can usually be found under a blanket and snoozing quietly in her bed. She does well with men, women, and children who treat her kindly. She sat happily for a long time while a gentle 4 year old petted her. Simmy gets along with other dogs and doesn't pay much attention to cats. She has been sleeping in a dog bed at night, but she would love to sleep with her people too.
Don't let Persimmon's medical issues scare you off. She is really very healthy, she just needs to stay on her thyroid meds. As long as she continues to eat good quality dog food her skin problems will go away for good. If you are looking for a laid back little lady to share walks and relaxation, Persimmon is your girl!

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
