BIO:

Sparky was found as a stray, tired and skinny.  He captured the hearts of the animal shelter staff and was waiting patiently there when he was rescued by AADR.  He is eating heartily and has almost reached his ideal weight.  Sparky has an overbite and as a result ended up losing his front teeth.  He still has his canines and most of his back teeth and has no trouble eating dry food or a dog treat.  Sparky is missing a little chunk out of the edge of one ear, but it has healed and just gives him some extra character.

With rest, good food, and TLC, Sparky has blossomed into a cheerful and handsome little fellow.  He gets along well with other dogs, ignores cats, and so far has loved every person he's met, even the veterinarian.  Sparky has not been around young children, but is a good natured boy and would be fine with children who are old enough to understand that they must be gentle with him.

Sparky walks well on a leash and wags happily as we stroll along.  He also enjoys sitting in a lap or lounging in a sunny spot or dog bed.   At night he prefers to sleep with his people and snoozes quietly until you wake up.  He is then ready for a morning ear scratch and belly rub.  If you insist, he will sleep in a dog bed too.
Sparky is housebroken and does well as long as he is taken out first thing in the morning, as soon as you get home in the evening, after meals, and before bedtime.  If left for extended periods he will use a pee pad.  Sparky will stay in a crate, but because he is so good in the house he has been permitted to stay free in a dog safe area.  He will quietly hang out, waiting to greet you when you return home.

If you are looking for a happy go lucky little buddy, Sparky is your man!

More about Sparky...NY

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
