Update:

Damian has been tolerating being crated in a wire crate along with his favorite toy and a kong full of peanut butter.  He won’t fight going in, but is very sad and will cry for the first few minutes after you leave him.  He will settle down and be fine for the remainder of the time.

After spending some time with him around other people, I think he would be OK in a home with older children who will understand they have to go slow with him.  Once he knows someone, he is very affectionate and protective.  He always wants to be near you.  When meeting new people, Damian prefers to be held by someone he feels comfortable with, and wants to get to know them at his own pace.

Damian is truly a very smart boy who loves, loves, loves to be outside.  He would prefer if everyone else would be out with him, but is still very happy being the only one in the yard.  He likes to run around the yard and chase the other animals and sometimes he will just lay down next to a tree or just in the grass and nap!  He has to have his favorite toy with him at all times which is a little chipmunk which isn’t much larger than his mouth.  “Chippy” has to sleep under the covers with us at night.  If you pull him out of the covers, Damian will crawl out, get Chippy, and take him back under the covers to snuggle with.  This toy will have to go to his furever home with him.

Hi!  My name is Damian and I am a happy, sweet, loveable boy who is full of energy.  I love other animals and my Foster Mommy!  I was taken to a shelter as a stray but ended up in a foster home because I do NOT like the shelter.  A nice lady from the shelter took me home until a better place could be found.  This is what she had to say about me…

“He is super cuddly and I would describe him as a ‘velcro’ lap-loving dog. Damian is a bit scared of new people, but once he knows a person he will follow them anywhere. He is treat motivated. Damian has been spotted curling up/sleeping with various dogs, cats, goats, and a pig at my house (Anyone who will hold still long enough). So-he is great with other pets. He was very nervous around children, and hides behind me. Damian has been in a crate some, but cries until he settles. He sleeps with me and burrows under the blankets like a typical doxy. As soon as he walks into the shelter, he becomes overwhelmed and stressed- the opposite of his true personality.”

My new Foster Mommy completely agrees with everything she said!  It takes me a little while to trust people, but once I do, I am super loveable!  I like to be involved in everything that is happening!  When company comes, I growl and bark and prefer to be held by my Foster Mommy.  I can jump from the ground into her arms!  Once I sniff them and see they mean no harm I will settle down.  I like women better than men.  Men are not as easy to trust.

My legs are long so it is easy for me to get on things the average dachshund cannot.  I can easily get on the couch or chairs and even a few places I am not supposed to.  Don’t tell my Foster Mommy, but I like to get up and eat the cat food when she is not looking.

Running and playing outside is one of my favorite things to do.  I can jump a fence or gate so you really need to keep an eye on me.  I go potty outside like a champ as long as it’s not raining.  But really, who wants to go out in the rain?  I have had some accidents in the house so it is important to keep me on a schedule.  At night, I love to snuggle down under the covers and sleep next to my Foster Mommy all night long.

I like to play with toys and squeaky balls.  Sometimes I lay on my back and waller around with the toy in my paws and mouth and other times I run like the wind to chase it!  I know how to fetch!  I am very smart and a fast learner.  Wrestling with my Foster siblings is fun too.  And yes, I do like a nice warm lap or furry friend to cuddle up with for nap time so I would love to have a home with another young pet to do these things with.  Do you think there is room in your home for a doggy like me?  If so, please contact my Foster Mommy, she would be happy to answer any questions.

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
