What a shame everyone keeps overlooking this great guy!! He walks great on a leash, he's a great dog and just because he's not the little 10lbs boy he's being left in foster care, what a shame!

River came from a high kill shelter in North Alabama where he was dumped. We were contacted and asked if we would take him. We don’t know any of his history unfortunately, so we can only guess what his life was like before coming to rescue.

River has a beautiful soft coat that just needs a little care once a week. He’s a very proud dachshund and loves to show off his style. He’s a laid back, lap dog but will go on car rides with you too. He walks great on a leash and really just wants to be with his master. He would be fine with another dog or by himself. He does like to hog your lap so we have to remind him that there is room for all.

He does like to sleep in the big bed with his owner(s) and is a great watch dog but not overly barky. 

If you are looking for an adult, handsome, mild mannered gentleman than look no further, River is your man and yes he knows his name.

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
