Tanner is a light red dapple fellow who was passed around to several owners who could not afford to properly care for him. Fortunately his last caretaker brought him to the animal control shelter where his immediate needs were seen too and he was rescued by AADR. Tanner recently had his teeth cleaned and lost several, but he has no trouble eating dry food that has been moistened. Tanner had some back pain when he was first taken to the shelter, but with some crate rest and TLC, he is now doing fine. To ensure that he remains feeling good, Tanner is not allowed to go up and down more than a few steps and stays crated when nobody is home to monitor his activities. He enjoys walks, but we limit them to 10 minutes or less so he does not get tired.
Tanner is very friendly with everyone he meets. He gets along well with both dogs and cats. He likes children, but any in his new family should be old enough to understand that they must be gentle with him.
Tanner is a cheerful little fellow who enjoys sitting in a lap or burrowing under a blanket. He sleeps quietly all night snuggled up in a dog bed with one of his dog friends. Tanner is housebroken and does fine if he goes out first thing in the morning, as soon as he comes out of his crate, and right before bedtime. If you are looking for a friendly little buddy to share short walks and quiet time with, Tanner is your man!

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
