Hiway is about 4 years old, black/tan tweenie dachshund. Hiway was picked up by a good samaritan as he ran down the middle of a busy highway during rush hour, hence his name. He is a good boy, seems very sweet and loving. But he needs a fenced in yard or someone to walk him on his trips outside. He will run and run if not contained. He is headed to the vet this week to be neutered and checked out. He has no apparent health problems. He has a small scar on his back and needs to gain some weight. Hiway also talks sometimes. He sounds like he is growling, but he is actually telling you something important. Hiway gets along with all his foster brothers but gathers at the bunny hutch for some entertainment, so no cats or small animals. I think he would do great with some children older than 6/7 years old as he will jump on you for attention. No one has ever come forth to claim Hiway after flyers and newspaper ads were placed locally. He needs a good home, one that will keep him safe and will love him.

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
