Update on                                       Charlie

As visible in the pictures, Charlie has slimmed down nicely being fed dog food instead of table food.  He had adjusted and is eating well; occasionally he will have an egg over easy for a special treat. 

Charlie continues to be a bit shy where visitors are concerned and sounds like a pit bull until he gets accustomed to the visitor.  For this reason, Charlie would do better in a quiet household with adults.    He is definitely a watch dog and will let you know of things unusual. 

Charlie much prefers inside the house to outside.  He is not a fan of going out at all, thus would do well in an adult household where long walks or an exercise buddy are not expected, even an apartment.  He is playful and active in the house, but going outside seems to make him anxious and he wants to go right back in.

Charlie does well with his foster doggie girlfriend and plays well with her.  He is a “burrower” when he goes to sleep and he is completely out of sight under the blankets.  He sleeps all night quietly. 

Charlie exhibits some really sweet unique habits.  He is not destructive (except for stuffed toys), but likes to take foster mom’s shoes on the sofa in the daytime when she is away.  This seems to be a “closeness” action, as he does not do it when foster mom is home.  When sitting on the sofa with foster mom, he will often lie on the back of the sofa cushion with his head on her shoulder while she watches TV. 

Charlie has a lot of love and entertainment to offer someone.  He is quite devoted to his “human” friend and gives lots of warm kisses…..would you like to be Charlie’s human?

Charlie is a delightful little fellow.  He is happy, full of kisses and has a constantly wagging tail.  He takes a little while to get used to unfamiliar surroundings, but acclimated quickly to his new foster home.  Even when he was brand new with foster mom, he was pleasant and approachable and receptive to older children.

Charlie is a good watch dog and will let his owner know quickly if something is awry.  He is unfriendly and noisy to newcomers until his owners are present and accepting, which foster mom sees as a positive trait.   Once he sees that the person is okay with owner, he is then friendly and happy.

Charlie walks well on a leash and is curious about his surroundings.  He is quite vocal with cats, but no aggression has been noted.  He responds to verbal scolding and learns quickly.  As common of the breed, Charlie cannot be trusted off leash as he will quickly dart away after something that catches his eye.  He will do best in a home with fully fenced yard and doggie door.  Charlie is not hyper at all, he is alert and engaged in his surroundings, but not a bundle of energy like some dogs.  He is trustworthy in the house, does not destroy property.

Charlie likes to be close to his loved one(s).  His original owner stated he preferred men, but he has done well with female foster home and is quite loving.  He is a snuggle bug and prefers sleeping in bed with owner.  Foster mom does not prefer that and he has done fine with the bedroom door closed; he quietly sleeps with the other dogs without causing a fuss.

Charlie’s original owners allowed Charlie to feast on table food and thus he was overweight.  He is much closer to a healthy weight now, but his new owners need to be diligent about limiting table food and treats.  An occasional treat of table food is fine for him, but when he first came to AADR, he would not eat dog food well.  Having gotten past that, he needs to be maintained on dog food.  He has done well on Iams for small breeds or Nutro.

Charlie will be a great source of comfort and company to a lucky person or family.  A visual representation of Charlie would be a yellow SMILEY FACE— consistently bright, smiling and full of positive energy!  

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
