Update 5-14-13:
Swaggart just had a bath and his nails trimmed and is enjoying a rawhide with his other foster friends. He is such a joy and would fit right into any home. He'd make a great first pet for anyone. He is well mannered loves to walk and ride. Comes when he is called. He is house broken. Doesn't get into any kinda trouble when he has to be left home. He loves to sleep in the big bed with me at night. He cuddles on the couch when it's down time for me. He gets along with everyone two legged and four legged. He is an older boy but, you'd never know it. He has a heart condition that is controlled by his daily medication that he takes twice a day(Lasik) a 90 day supply is about 60.00. He is not a sickly kinda dog. He is very active and healthy and will live a long life. He is a well rounded boy....
Wow!!! Swaggart I can not say enough good things about this boy. One of the best dogs I have ever had the pleasure of fostering or even owning. He gets along good with everyone 2 and 4 legged. Once he bonds with you..well it doesn't get any better then that. He loves to sleep right next to me and doesn't move til I wake up. He loves to lay on me when we are watching TV. He loves to take walks. He loves car rides and he listens well. He gets so excited when I bring the harness and leash out. He goes out first thing in the morning and does his business. I ask him every few hours if he needs to go outside literally I say Swaggart do you need to go outside If he does he will go to the door if he doesn't he just stays on the couch. I feed him twice a day. He's really not into treats but, looks forward to his piece of hot dog which has his heart medication in it. He does not chew on anything. He just sits on the back f the couch and watches for me to come home. Again one of the best dogs I have ever had very mellow, very well adjusted.....love this boy......I think he would be just fine being the only pet and his leash manner are GREAT!!!

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
