BIO:
Penny is a pretty and petite little lady with a shiny chocolate-red coat and a cute little brown nose to match. She spent a month at a county animal shelter before she was rescued by AADR. Penny was skinny and scared when she first arrived at her foster home, but with healthy food and patient kindness she is now at a good weight and enjoys being near her people. She is still timid with strangers, but once she gets to know you she is very sweet. She is not a demanding dog and likes to curl up on the couch or in a dog bed. If you are on the couch she will snuggle up right beside you. Penny walks well on a leash and enjoys taking walks around the neighborhood. She is house trained and will use a pee pad if she can't get outside. Penny is crate trained and sleeps quietly in her crate at night, although she would be very happy sleeping with her person too. She gets along well with the other small dogs in her foster home and is also fine with big dogs. As she settles in, she is getting to be more playful. She would be fine as an only dog too. Penny has not lived with cats, but when we see them on walks, she doesn't give them a second glance. Penny likes both men and women. Because of her small size and shy nature she would not do well with very young children, but she is fine with older children who understand that she will sometimes need her own space. If you have the patience to let Penny get to know you, you will be rewarded with a beautiful and loveable little friend.
We will not adopt into the state of CT or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states. If you have an issue with this you need to take this up with your legislatures. We are working hard to get approved to bring dogs into the state of NH and until that happens we can not adopt to anyone in that state either.
More about Penny...NY
Is Not Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
