BIO:

“Have no fear, Underdog is here!”.  Yes, Simon bears a strong resemblance to the mighty Underdog…both in looks and personality.  Simon is all that.  He loves to leap, play, roll, crouch and pounce and just act goofy.  He has developed what he considers to be a fierce bark (never a bite or nip out of him) and stands up to challenge the more senior dogs of the pack.  Yet even when he stands up to them, he honors their position in the pack and backs down.  Simon would love to be the spoiled boy of a loving family and in return, will protect the castle/kingdom from any potential harm whether it comes in the form of a squirrel in the yard or an ant crawling across the porch.  Protecting you from anything bigger may be a bit of a challenge for him because he’s a tiny little guy but he has a big personality.  He loves to snuggle and cuddle into you.  He loves to be admired (expect a lot of this because he is gorgeous) and has a special little prance that may get him into trouble with the lady dogs.

A breeder surrendered Simon to AADR.  Simon is smart and will train easily.  We’ve had him for about a week and in this time he has learned to use the dog door, how to communicate with his pack members and how to focus his attention on the humans (he would just pop about before and not really concentrate on anything).  We will continue to work on developing Simon’s concentration and train him to sit, stay, leave it and other basic commands.  One note about Simon, and sit down if you’re a long-time Dachshund lover because this is going to shock you:  Simon is not motivated by food.  Yes, apparently there are a few Dachshunds out there who will not do back flips for a piece of food and Simon is one of them.  But have no worries, he’s bright and wants to please.  Cooked chicken and salmon skin do get a reaction out of him but other treats just don’t motivate him.  The ‘good boy’ and a smile do much more to motivate this little guy.

Simon would love to have some canine playmates yet if those weren’t available, he’d like the human variety to keep him company and to play with.  He’s a full dachshund so a home with minimal stairs is preferred (or access to stairs is restricted).  He will enjoy lots of walks and time with his adoptive family if he does not have access to a fenced yard.  He would like me to suggest that he shares the bed with you because he will be able to guard/protect you better that way, plus he likes to burrow under the covers (but that’s just a fringe benefit of bed privilages).  He would also like me to mention that he really loves the soft and expensive plush bedding and prefers to have a heater on in his sleeping area if the weather is below 40 degrees outside.  Oh, one more thing, he wants me to mention that he really loves his toys.  He appreciates gifts of deer antlers, Bobo’s from Petsmart, Mr. Tigerpants and chew bones.

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
