Kelah was rescued from a shelter in northwest Alabama after she was turned into the shelter by her owner. Shortly after arriving home with her foster mom Kelah peed in the kitchen and there was obviously blood in her urine. She was immediately taken to the vet who discovered she had bladder stones. She had surgery the next day and the doctor removed 15 stones from her bladder-two of which were as big as a half dollar only not flat. Her stones were sent off for testing. The news was very good. A special diet is not required but her attending vet strongly advised a diet of Hill's C/D food to be on the safe side. This is a prescription food but well worth the cost to keep this angel happy and healthy. She also had a dental. She had lost several teeth prior to rescue but lost several more during her dental.
Now that we have covered Kelah's medical history, it's time for a little about her personality. Kelah must have been a drill sergeant in a previous life. She wants what she wants when she wants it. She doesn't ask-she demands and she expects you to respond quickly. That's the dachshund personality. She wants to be catered to at every turn. Kelah will need to go to a quiet home with few visitors. Kelah bonds strongly to her person but she does not do well with strangers. She does bark and would not be a good fit for an apartment or condo. She does well with other dogs but will give a warning growl if they invade her space. She does not do well with cats.

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
