Temperament/personality:

Frank is a joy.  He loves little kisses on his nose and snuggling in your neck.  At five weeks he appears to be rather quiet, though he loves to pounce and play with his siblings.

History:

Frankie came to us via Animal Control in Alabama.  His mother Lulu was pregnant when she was picked up and brought to Animal Control.  Lulu is a tiny girl yet gave birth to seven pups via c-section.  Frankie is one of the four who survived.  He has been at his foster home since he was a week and a half old.

This little family is a dachshund/Chihuahua and something else J mix.  So far, they are trending toward more dachshund; all of them have the shorter legs and longer body typical of a dachshund but we may see changes as they grow.  Their ears are also longer and not typical of a Chihuahua.  Mom is a mini dachshund/Chihuahua mix whose body resembles a dachshund but whose ears and eyes reveal traits of a Chihuahua.

Training:

All puppies are being trained to use the mat or use the bathroom outside.  They are brought outside after each meal and after waking from their many naps.  They are rewarded with praise when they use the bathroom outside or on the mat.

All puppies are crate trained; they prefer to sleep there…all piled on top of each other J

Best environment:

  • Frankie will be fine with or without kids though we do recommend children older than 7 years old.
  • He’ll do best with a family who can provide a yard or multiple daily walks.

More about Frank/Frankie...TN

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
