BIO:
Lulu is very mellow, patient, relaxed and most importantly, gracious. She was a wonderful mom to her pups; very loving and generous. Lulu is totally blind. She also has ear polyps so we make sure her ears are clean to avoid flair-ups (see History). Regardless of the condition she arrived in, this girl is a champ. She never complained about her ear infections or physical limitations, she was just very concerned about her pups and taking care of them.
Lulu is happiest when lying next you on the sofa, being with you in the garden or simply hanging around you as you go about your tasks. She’s curious, despite her limitations (vision) and learns her environment quickly by using her other senses. She has a favorite place in our kitchen where she likes to lay and wait for us to return. She may let out an enthusiastic bark when dinner is being prepared or when she wants to know where you are. She loves to be outside with me when I garden. She’ll stay out there as long as I’m out there. She’ll go off on her own and then return by my side to for a pat or kiss.
For those who may have had a ‘digger’ in the past (my Hunter is a digger and brings all kinds of surprises in the kitchen), Lulu is NOT a digger. This girl is just low maintenance and a joy to have around. She doesn’t ask for much and is very appreciative of whatever she receives. This is an appropriate time to add that this girl is crazy about cooked salmon skin, scrambled eggs, tuna and chicken. Cheese doesn’t agree with her.
History:
Lulu was pregnant when she was picked up and brought to Animal Control in Alabama. Lulu is a tiny girl yet gave birth to seven pups via c-section. When she arrived at our rescue she had the worst case of cauliflower ear (ear infection) our vet had ever seen and has sustained permanent damage in the form of polyps.
Lulu is a mini dachshund/Chihuahua mix who’s body resembles a dachshund but whose ears and eyes reveal some traits of a Chihuahua.
Training:
• Lulu is fine with a crate. • Lulu goes to the bathroom when taken outside. She’ll go on a potty mat if one is provided in the area where she’s sleeping. She does miss it occasionally, but if you take her outside and ensure her bladder is empty then she won’t go in the house/on the mat. • Lulu uses the dog door.
Best environment:
• Lulu will do best with a family who can provide a fenced yard, a warm lap and some assistance getting to know her environment. • She’d love to have a dog friend to be with, but she will also be fine as the only dog of a person who wants a loving companion.
More about Lulu...TN
Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
