Temperament/personality:

Boo Boo is a joyful puppy and loves playing with other dogs.  He greats all situations in life with enthusiasm and confidence.  He is gentle, quiet and loves to be held and to follow.  Boo Boo is adorable and never asks for much.  He’s loves children and loves being outside.  He’s known for finding sticks and carrying them around the yard.  He also has a passion for acorns and acorn hats.  He isn’t a digger like many other dachshunds, maybe that’s because he’s a mix.

History:

Boo Boo and his brother Yogi were born on December 17th, 2010 beginning at 7am.  Their mom Penny gave birth to four pups,  Boo Boo and Yogi were the only two who survived.  Boo Boo was the last born and the smallest.  His brother Yogi kept him warm throughout the winter and Boo Boo returned the favor as soon as he grew big enough to climb onto Yogi (who is considerably larger than Boo Boo).

Training:

Boo Boo knows he must sit (and wait for the release) to receive his meals.  He also knows he must be in a sitting position to receive his treats. He is highly motivated to do tricks for food.  Food will be the best training device for him although that’s not to imply that he doesn’t love the praise and petting by the humans when he does a great job.

He is trained to use a dog door and will even do so when it’s raining outside.  He also uses the potty mat when he is in the house.  We do let him roam through the rest of the house and have noticed he will occasionally mark with a small piddle spot.  This is a training issue we are working with and is pretty easy to resolve.

Boo Boo knows his name and comes to you when called.

Best environment:

Boo Boo has a low-maintenance personality and will be happy as a member of an existing pack or as an only pet.  He doesn’t demand your attention or have any alpha characteristics.  He’ll be fine in any type of home whether it is an apartment with a doggy park or a home with a fenced in yard.  Yogi is very responsive and playful with both my 7 year old daughter and my 13 year old son.

Yogi will do best with a family who has experiential knowledge in training Dachshunds.  This little guy is so gentle, thoughtful, playful and loving.  He’ll make a great family pet and will be devoted to his new pack.

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
