BEING FOSTERED IN BURNSVILLE, NC Hello, my name is Leo. This is my life's story: I had a great daddy who loved me so much my entire life. One day he got sick with something called cancer and had to go to hospice care. That is when I was sent to live with his daughter and her family. My new home had little kids and I was frightened by them because I wasn't accustomed to the noise, activities and impulsiveness of children. One of them grabbed me and picked me up real fast. I was so frightened; I didn't know what to do and could only think to protect myself, so I snapped at the child. I didn't mean to, I was just so scared. I'm told that protecting myself like that was a bad thing to do. That is how I ended up at the animal shelter. That place was so scary. I missed my daddy so much. I longed for my old life where I was happy and safe in his arms. Because of the bad thing I did, I was considered un-adoptable. The shelter contacted rescue. If it weren't for them, I don't know what would have happened to me.
I still miss my daddy, but I am doing pretty well in foster care. My foster mom asked me what type of home I would like. I told her that because I am still frightened of children and was the only dog in my daddy's house, I would prefer a home without children or other animals, but I could go to a home with another dog if it was a nice one. I just prefer to get all the attention myself. I would really like a home where they have plenty of time to play with tennis balls and toys of all kinds. You see, I get very excited at playtime and will let out a yip to let you know how happy I am to play.
My foster mom says I can't go to a house with cats. She also says that I am just as sweet as sugar. I adore grown people, and I am not shy in the least. I am completely housebroken, 7 years young (I act like a puppy), and incredibly handsome if I do say so myself. Everybody says I am handsome, so it must be true! I walk perfectly on a leash and ride great in the car. I am neutered and UTD on all my shots, on heartworm and flea prevention.
I can't wait to get to my perfect forever home so that I can play and snuggle with you and do all of those wonderful things that I miss doing with my daddy. I like men and women both, but prefer men just little bit. So, please fill out an application to adopt me. I promise to be a good boy and make you happy!
Love, Leo

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
