BIO:

A dog like sweet William is a rare one indeed. He came to me from a shelter in rural South Carolina after being dumped by his owner. We don’t know anything about his past except that he had suffered abuse at the hands of some inhumane person. When he arrived he had a damaged eye that had to be removed and lumps on his ribs from past abuse. The tips of his ears are damaged and he has white hairs on his face and head due to age and scarring. When you look at him, William seems unremarkable but nothing could be farther from the truth:  while his body carries the marks of past unkindness, his sweet and loving soul show no such marks. If I am working in the house he will sit quietly and watch my every move; if I call him to me he trots over without hesitation, his happy tail wagging in delight that I have said his name. If I am sitting at the computer he settles at my feet with his head resting on the top of my foot. He is perfectly behaved on his leash and will trot quietly beside you on your afternoon walk. William was easily house trained and should adapt easily to any home with practice and routine. He learns very quickly and soon will know what is acceptable at your home. William loves to be held; its as if he’s making up for the time in his past when he didn’t receive comfort and affection. He will ask to be picked up but will not jump on your furniture unless invited. His favorite place is snuggled tightly against you in the big bed.

William’s remaining eye has evidence of some cataracts starting to form and he may lose his vision completely in the future. For now, he navigates our home and backyard with ease and will occasionally bump into my leg if I’m standing on his blind side. Blind dogs are not uncommon and there are many resources for people who love and live with sight challenged pets. William is a very special dog who is ready to begin the best days of his life with you by his side. We call him “Worm” because he wiggles into everyone’s heart. AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
