We just can't get them from one Coast to the other but some day we hope to have enough volunteers to do that as well for now please look for dogs on your coast.

Temperament/personality:

He’s playful and fun, yet he’s a bit more reserved than some of the more playful members of his pack. He’s loves to lay in our laps, is the more studious of the bunch and enjoys playing with the others or exploring by himself. He’s very bright and quick to pick up newly trained skills. We joke that we should have called him Poindexter because he impresses us as “the smart one” who is always observing and gathering information.

History:

Harold came to us with his six other brothers and sisters when they were five weeks old. Their mother Selena was turned into the Hohenwald, TN animal shelter. The puppies stayed at the shelter until they were five weeks old which is when the shelter notified AADR they had dachshund/beagle mix puppies.

Training:

Potty training:

Like his brothers and sisters, the focus at this time has been on potty training. He is 99% there. They are taken out each morning after waking to go to the bathroom and then fed. They play for the next two hours or so and have use of the dog door to go to the bathroom. We rarely have any accidents in the area of the home the dogs use. They are not given the run of the house so we can reinforce the lessons of potty training. We praise them endlessly when they use the bathroom outside. They respond very well to this training. We also take them outside at night before bed and encourage them to go to the bathroom. Again, we praise them a lot if they go to reinforce the message.

Dog door:

He uses the dog door and enjoys the freedom it offers. He knows to use it when he needs to go to the bathroom.

These puppies are very bright and will train easily.

Best environment:

Harold will be fine in a home with another dog or one without. He isn’t a dominant dog. Most puppies, including Harold are best placed with older children (above the age of seven) if there are children in the home at all.

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
