Dogs are known as "Man's Best Friend" and no dog completes this description better than Mick! Mick is a beautiful, deep red little guy who just LOVES his person. He is VERY loyal and is happiest when he is by his special person's side. He is a happy -go-lucky little boy who thankfully, seems to be unaffected by his past. We don't know much about where Mick came from except that he was found as a stray in Virginia. The shelter got in touch with Rescue and this is how Mick came to live with his foster mom in South Carolina.

Mick is the perfect little dachshund companion. Mick gets along GREAT with other dogs and loves his foster doxie sibling and foster sheltie sibling. I believe that he would do well as an only dog (as long as his person isn't gone for many hours each day...Mick would get lonely all by himself!) but he does enjoy the company of other furkids in the home.  He will go in his crate with a treat but he might bark a bit if he knows you are still in the house. He thinks he is just a little person and doesn't want to miss anything! He gets along with everyone here at his foster home and he quickly became one of the family. He loves toys, car rides, taking walks, snuggeling, being held, following you around the house, meeting new people, rolling in his blankets, and of course he loves dinner times and the word "treat". He not only is potty trained but scratches on the door when he wants in and out. Like with any dachshund, there might be a few accidents and he will  need some time to adjust to his new home but he picks up quickly on new schedules. Mick also loves to watch tv with his person. He will sit right next to you with his eyes glued to the tv. He will even tilt his head back and forth at the best parts! He is certainly the life of the party no matter where he goes!

Mick LOVES to please his person. He knows the sit command and he knows that whenever he wants a treat, he has to "sit pretty" first. He comes when called (either by name or with a whistle) and quickly responds to the word "No". As you can see, with a little bit of patience, love, and a stable home, Mick will make the most loving and endeared family member. He would do very well with a family who would let Mick come with them for car rides and take trips with them and to really be a part of their family! Mick's foster mom and dad just took him "Downtown" with them and he did great! We did lots of window shopping, got some ice cream, and then stopped by Barkery Bistro so Mick could have a snack as well. Mick walked right along the whole time. He let lots of people pet him and even made friends with a yorkie and a HUGE mastiff!!! Everyone commented on how friendly and HANDSOME mick was. We had a great day and Mick curled up on the couch when we got home content and happy!

Mick is listed as special needs because he has a stage 2 heart murmur (out of 6). A heart murmur can be common in dogs. Mick was probably born with it. A murmur is basically an extra or irregular sound heard during the heartbeat (which people can have as well).  Most murmurs are treated with a very inexpensive medicine (about $15 a month)  that keeps the blood pressure down so that the heart doesn't have to work as hard.  We took Mick to the vet to get all the details on his particular heart murmur. The vet was not overly concerned about Mick's condition because it is so early on and now he can be monitored (via yearly vet check ups) and treated. It most likely is not a danger to his health and just is an extra beat in the heart. He doesn't seem to get fatigued easily and his murmur does not cause him to cough. She said that it does not seem that Mick's murmur is growing and that it shouldn't cause trouble for him later on in life. Mick still loves to run and enjoy the backyard with the other dogs. His body build, muscles, and blood flow are very healthy.   If you have any other questions about this, feel free to email his foster mom.

Don't let this little boy pass you by. I've taken him out to the vet and to some animal friendly areas and everyone he meets falls in love with him. I have even had people come up to us in the car and comment on how beautiful and friendly Mick is! Now we just need to find the right family!

Mick doesn't deserve to be without a family and home. Please show Mick that he will never have to be left alone or lost ever again!!

Good with Dogs

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
