How could a dog this tiny and cute be out on his own? Somehow, Henry found himself in that situation. He was found by some people who searched for his owners but when no one claimed him, animal control was called to pick him up. Next thing he knew, Henry was in the shelter. The workers fell in love with him and as soon as his holding time was up, they called us to come get him. When the SSDR member picked him up, he crawled right up under her chin and tucked himself close to cuddle.

Now, the good news is that he was heartworm negative! The bad news is that he lost a few teeth when he had his dental. He's now up to date on his immunizations, has been neutered and wants a home of his own. He has used the doggie door without fail and behaves himself so well in the house that he must have had someone at some time who cared about him. He stands up to the other dogs and has plenty of dachshund attitude in a tiny body. He probably should not go to a home with small children because of his size.

Look at that face. Have you seen a cuter little guy than this?

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
