Winnie has a story to tell and for her it's not a happy one. She was loved and happy in her forever home until her mommy started getting very sick. She knew something was wrong and tried to protect her mommy and stay with her as much as she could but nothing she did made her mommy any better. Some nights when her mommy was in a lot of pain she'd just lay on her hoping to take some of the pain away but nothing Winnie tried worked. You see Winnie's mom has bone cancer and the radiation wasn't working. Winnie's mom got so sick she was no longer able to care for Winnie. And even though they had a doggie door Winnie wouldn't go outside cause she was afraid of being away from her mommy. Her mom had no choice but to take her to the pound because she didn't know about us and none of the family wanted Winnie. Now you know how we got her. We have been in touch with Winnie's mom to let her know that Winnie is fine and starting to lose some much needed weight and using the doggie door here. Winnie was sad here for a day or two but now she walks around with her tail up and wagging when she sees someone. She is no longer feeling her mom's pains. Her mommy was very relieved and grateful that we have Winnie and that she is doing fine. It broke her heart to give Winnie up but she just didn't know what esle to do. With all that said, Winnie is a very, very sweet, happy girl. She is good with kids or grandkids and with cats and other dogs. She does like to sleep in the big bed but is also just as happy sleeping in a doggie bed or open crate in the same room as her humans. She is UTD on all shots, heartworm negative, on Interceptor and Frontline. She's had a dental and her teeth are great. For a big girl she is in great health but we also know it's best to get this extra weight off her. She walks great on a leash so could go with you on your walks and is friendly with everyone she meets. Please consider giving Winnie a lasting forever home and making a cancer patient happy knowing that her dog is in a wonderful loving home.

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
