Hershey was dumped at a shelter with severe hair loss issues.  We are not sure what caused it, but it is clearing up and most of his hair has come back.  He still has a few places where his hair is very thin (tail, back legs and ears), but it looks like it will fill in.

Hershey is a real sweetheart and a pretty laid-back fellow.  He can be a bit barky at times, especially when he is outside but we are working on that.  He is not much of a kisser, but really wants to be close to his people and loves to cuddle.  He has such a sweet and expressive face and has the sitting up begging trick down pat.  He is quite mellow and gets along with all dogs, male and female.  Not sure about cats, but since he is so mellow, I can’t imagine that there would be a problem.  Hershey does not like to walk in grass, and does everything he can do to stay out of it, especially if the grass is wet.  You should see him walk along the landscape timbers like a tightrope and then jump to the stepping stones.  He is housebroken; as long as you make sure he gets out several times a day and does his business.  I have a doggie door but he prefers not to use it.  In summary, Hershey is a great companion dog and would be glad to keep you company and your lap nice and toasty.   A few belly rubs, good food and water, and you will have a best friend.

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
