Gidget is a cheerful little Chihuahua/dachshund mix. She is a pretty red color with a white chest and toes and a little premature gray on her face. She was left at a crowded rural shelter with her friend Cricket when their elderly owner could no longer care for them. Gidget was very overweight when she arrived, but a healthy diet and walks have gotten her to a good weight. Gidget is a friendly girl and is calm and well behaved. She knows her name and comes running when called. She enjoys going on walks and wrestling with the other dogs. She sleeps quietly by her fostermom’s bed at night and eagerly greets her in the morning. Gidget doesn’t like to be picked up and carried, but she does love sitting in a lap or beside you on the couch. She is housebroken and will use a pee pad when nobody is home to take her outside. She hasn’t been around cats, but she does bark at them when she sees them on walks, so might not do well with a cat in the house. She gets along with fine with other dogs. Because of her small size Gidget would do best with older children who will remember to give her some space. If you are looking for a ray of sunshine in your life, Gidget is the girl for you!

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
