BIO:  It is with great pleasure that we introduce you to Mikey! Mikey is a dog who will take some time to get to know, but oh, is he worth the effort!

Mikey was surrendered by his owner in South Carolina through no fault of his own. Mikey is a wonderful dog! He's almost perfect, except he gets very anxious if left alone. He is also extremely guarded when he first meets strangers. He is definitely the dog they had in mind when they developed the 3-3-3 rule (3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to learn your routine, 3 months to feel at home). As a matter of fact, it was almost ten days before he let his foster dad pick him up! Now that he has become comfortable in his new environment, he is a fantastic little dog. He gets along with all other dogs, male or female. He likes the companionship of other dogs and people that he has come to trust, so he'll do best with another small adult dog to keep him company. His ideal home is one where his owners are retired and around most of the time. A person who works at home would be wonderful.

He is fully housetrained and does not look or act like a 12-year-old dog. In fact, everyone at the vet thought he was six or seven years old.

Here are some items that Mikey needs to find that perfect home:

  • He tends to warm up to females more quickly than males, so a female is highly recommended but not required.
  • No apartments, townhomes, or shared walls. His separation anxiety causes him to “sing the song of his people,” so single-family homes only.
  • No children. Older kids would be fine, but he’s too skittish for small children.

Mikey is one of the sweetest fosters his foster dad has met. He is fearful at first, and it will take time to earn his trust. Once you earn that trust, though, he will be your best friend and constant companion. Could you possibly be that lucky person to have Mikey in your home?

============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ==============

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund’s back or get bitten.

If you have questions about this dog, please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed on the bio form.  They have the most up-to-date information concerning the dog and would be happy to answer any questions about the animal.

There will be an additional $60 fee added for a required Health Certificate if traveling out of the state in which they are being fostered.

We will not adopt into CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states.  If you have any issue with this, you will need to take this up with your legislatures.

To understand the adoption process through AADR, please review the Adoption Information on our home page.  Transportation options are outlined on that page in Step 3.

Click this link to apply: https://www.allamericandachshundrescue.org/apply, it will take you to the application form.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend.  We have volunteers who will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast or Midwest.  We just can't get them from one coast to the other.  Please look for dogs on your coast.
