BIO: Dawson is a breeder dog who was surrendered to rescue. He is a super sweet, happy, loving pup, despite his poor start in life. He just adores being held and petted, and will let you know if you stop too soon! Dawson loves toys and treats, cuddles with the other pups, and tries to get them to play with him. This sweetie also likes to dance on his hind legs for his dinner, which is incredibly cute! He is very fond of warm, cozy dog beds to sleep in, and doesn’t mind his crate too much, but would definitely prefer the couch or bed.
Dawson is okay with being crated when I leave the house but wants to be let out as soon as I’m back. He would likely be happiest in a home with other pups but would probably be fine as an only dog if there were humans around most of the time, as he does not like to be alone. Dawson is a bit wary of younger children but would probably be fine with older kids. This little guy must have an adopter who has experience with dogs coming from a "breeder" environment that have not been properly socialized. Experience with dachshunds will be a plus. He is learning his house manners, housetraining, and using ramps very well.
Our must-haves for adorable Dawson include:
- A fenced yard
- Someone with strong "pack leader" skills, time, and patience to help Dawson with his socialization and learn the things he needs to have the best life possible as a member of his forever family
- Another small adult to senior dog to pal around with
- Someone who can be home often would be great
- No apartments, high-rises, condos, or duplexes
If you are looking for a sweet, cuddly, happy little boy, who just wants to be loved and given a little positive reinforcement, Dawson may be your new best friend!
============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ==============
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund’s back or get bitten.
If you have questions about this dog, please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed on the bio form. They have the most up-to-date information concerning the dog and would be happy to answer any questions about the animal.
There will be an additional $60 fee added for a required Health Certificate if traveling out of the state in which they are being fostered.
We will not adopt into CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states. If you have any issue with this, you will need to take this up with your legislatures.
To understand the adoption process through AADR, please review the Adoption Information on our home page. Transportation options are outlined on that page in Step 3.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers who will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast or Midwest. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. Please look for dogs on your coast.
