I would like to introduce you to Dawson. Coming in at only 11 pounds, this little boy has been with me for just a short time and already he has snuggled his way into our hearts! Dawson is the kind of doxie that doesn’t have a mean bone in his body and everyone just seems to gravitate towards his sweet personality. We don’t know much about Dawson’s past…only that his owners left town and a friend turned him into a shelter in SC. The nice shelter worker contacted AADR so that we could come pick him up.

When Dawson came into foster care, he had lost a lot of his hair due to a flea allergy. Just the slightest of breezes would make him shiver and shake. Plus, he was in a lot of pain because his teeth were in such bad condition and infections had developed. Not to mention he had been in a cold cage all by himself! So to say the least, Dawson has had a rough month. Despite all of this, Dawson displayed characteristics of a true Southern Gentlemen. As soon as I had him in my arms, he gave me kisses and nestled his nose into my shirt trying to get warm. Now his hair is growing in and is shiny, he is looking healthier. He also had a dental and now has pearly white teeth!

Dawson has come a long way in the time he has been here. He gets along great with dogs and all people as far as we can tell. We have taken him to dog events and he strutted around on his leash and said hello to everyone from dachshunds to great danes! He let kids pet him and take pictures with him.  He has all the vet ladies wrapped around his little paw and I feel comfortable bringing him over other people’s houses or downtown for a walk.  We are guessing he is about 7 years old but don’t tell him that! He has a lot of spunk and enjoys playing tag in the back yard with the other doxies! He really looks a lot like my 3 year old dachshund only with a little “silver lining” around the nose. He certainly would make a wonderful companion to keep you company during your daily activities and to keep you warm and cozy when you are home in the evening. After all, he is an expert snuggler! He does bark a bit when put in his crate but he will quiet down and go to sleep after your gone. He would not enjoy sleeping in his crate during the night however. He sleeps great in his own bed next to the big bed but his favorite is up in the bed with his person! He also loves to be your buddy in the kitchen and to do his part by cleaning up any crumbs that might drop. He walks well on a leash and listens well to your voice when talking to him. He loves car rides and will sit nicely in the passenger seat. Although he would love a nice fenced in yard, I don’t think its necessary as long as he stays on his leash and gets his exercise. He already knows his name and understands when I want him to come or to stop doing something. He is very eager to please. He can hear and see great and is really very smart. I think he would do well with children over the age of 5 because I think Dawson needs a fairly mild and calm home.  He likes having the company of another dog but I also think he would do very well with getting the attention all to himself as long as he isn't left alone for very long periods of time. He would love to be a lap dog but is content in laying close by and keeping you company.  As you can see, there really are no negatives about Dawson! He is a very easy going guy and would do well in almost any situation. I have no idea who gave him up but their loss is another family's very special gain.

Poor Dawson seems to have the odds stacked against him to no fault of his own. Dawson is extremely loyal. He has really attached himself to his foster mom in the short amount of time he has been here so I can’t imagine how much he will love his new forever family!

Can you show Dawson that not everyone that loves him will leave him? He really needs a stable home…one in which he is loved and feels safe.  Can Dawson be part of your family? If you do, I promise you that Dawson will spend his whole life thanking you for it!!

Out of State and Canadian adopters are welcome. We do not ship our dogs cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE.

More about Dawson....SC

Good with Dogs

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
