IT'S OFFICIAL!!!  DESI HAS JUST BEEN NAMED PEOPLE MAGAZINE'S SEXIEST DACHSHUND FOR 2010.  Okay, maybe not but he sure is one handsome dachshund.  He is absolutely drop dead gorgeous.  He looks like he could compete in a confirmation dog show and win hands down.  Unfortunately for Desi his good looks have not meant an easy life for him.  In fact, he's had a bit of a struggle the past few months.  He was left in a drop box at Colbert County Animal Shelter in northwest Alabama.  Chances are he was a stud dog someone got  tired of.  The shelter contacted a member of All American Dachshund Rescue and he was taken into rescue.  That sounds good except Desi was heartworm positive.  Now the good news.  He has completed his heartworm treatment and is all clear.  He is now on heartworm preventative.  Desi is as special as he is handsome.  Desi can be a little difficult to figure out at times so an experienced dachshund owner would probably be best for Desi.   Most of the time he is very laid back and just wants to snuggle on the couch or the big bed.  He does very well in a calm environment but he can be like an ADD child when he is overstimulated.  The previous owner more than likely manhandled him to get him to do what they wanted him to do so Desi reacts poorly to being handled in harsh manner.  He does not need to go to a home with children.  He is in a foster home with a single adult female and is doing great.  He gets along well with the other dogs in the home.  He ignores cats.  He is far to handsome to be bothered with cats.  He does need a strong alpha leader but one that will do so in a calm assertive way.  Desi loves praise.  Like most males, he loves to be told how handsome he is and how smart he is.  Desi is one very special man and we think there will be a very special someone that will want to adopt him.  Are you Desi's special someone?

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
