BIO UPDATE: Perry came from Alabama with his brother when his owner had to give him up, she knew rescue was the safest place to put him.
Perry is a gorgeous red longhair dachshund who appears mellow at first, until he gets in the yard. Then he's running and playing like a puppy. With the sweetest nature, Perry will capture your heart with just one look into his expressive eyes!
Perry loves to give kisses and wants to be close to his foster Humans at all times, often crawling into their lap. He is already housetrained (has not had a single accident in his foster home!) and gets along well with other small dogs his size. He has snapped at bigger dogs that got too close and is eventually fine with mid-sized dogs (up to 25 lbs.) but he does NOT like giant dogs at all. He will lunge at them and try to bite them, not at all like his usual sweet, laid-back self. His foster mom is working on socializing him more on walks when we see big dogs.
Perry has now mastered walking on a leash! When he came into rescue, he wouldn't move with a harness and leash on, but now he enjoys walks with his 3 foster dog siblings. Despite his small size, Perry can jump onto chairs and furniture, so is being trained to use the ramp and step. He is very smart and is already getting the hang of it! He will run up the stairs, so his foster mom gated off the stairs and he's already learned that he's not supposed to go up the big stairs by himself. Perry is also an escape artist and has tried to squeeze himself under the smallest opening in his foster home's fence. So, make sure your fence is secure and any openings (no matter how small), are reinforced.
Perry is not only adorable and sweet but smart too. He loves his 9-year-old human foster brother (so a home with respectful children is fine) and loves to sleep in his bed with him (but he is also fine in a gated area in his own bed and with the other dogs).
Our must-haves for handsome Perry include:
- A SECURELY fenced yard that is checked constantly ... Perry is an escape artist!
- Another young, small dog for him to play and hang with ... NO dogs over 25 lbs.!
- Someone who works from home some or a stay-at-home person
- No apartments, high-rises, or condos
Apply to adopt this sweet boy if you think you could be a great fit for him! Perry can't wait to find his forever family who will love and care for him the way he deserves!
BIO: Perry is a sweet, sweet boy and loves to be with his people or other dogs. He is housebroken and can stay in a crate if you have to leave for short periods of time.
He does fine with baths and enjoys being brushed. With his fine hair, you must be willing to brush him at least once or twice a week to keep his fur from matting. He would enjoy being in the Big Bed at night but right now he’s kept in the dining room where he can sleep in a doggie bed all night with no accidents at all.
If you are interested in finding out more about Perry, please email his foster mom. Thank you for thinking of rescue for your next best friend!
============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ==============
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund’s back or get bitten.
If you have questions about this dog, please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed on the bio form. They have the most up-to-date information concerning the dog and would be happy to answer any questions about the animal.
There will be an additional $60 fee added for a required Health Certificate if traveling out of the state in which they are being fostered.
We will not adopt into CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states. If you have any issue with this, you will need to take this up with your legislatures.
To understand the adoption process through AADR, please review the Adoption Information on our home page. Transportation options are outlined on that page in Step 3.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers who will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast or Midwest. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. Please look for dogs on your coast.
