BIO UPDATE (11/19/2021): Hershey has now been with his foster family for a while and we are getting to know him better. He will require a strong pack leader. He requires someone that will calm him when he gets too excited and is firm and consistent. Hershey has had a lot of uncertainty in his life so knowing what to expect is comforting to him. He is a sweet boy and has a lot of love to give.
BIO: Hershey came from Georgia after his previous owner abandoned him with another person. That person already had three Dachshunds and couldn’t take on another one. She contacted rescue and we said we would be happy to help. Hershey is a little timid and shy at first and he has to take time to warm up to you but once he does, then you’re okay in his book and he’s always happy to see you.
Our requirements for handsome Hershey include:
- A fenced yard
- Another dog for him to buddy up with
- No children or grandchildren under the age of 10 years
- No apartments, high-rises, or condo’s
- Someone who is home a lot would be great too as he loves to be with people
- Must be a strong pack leader
Hershey has been through a lot being moved around but if you can just give him a chance, he’s a beautiful boy inside and out. If you want to know any more about this boy, please reach out, we are happy to share what we know but keep in mind we’ve only had him a couple days so he’s still learning about us and us him.
============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ==============
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshunds back or get bitten.
If you have questions about this dog, please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed above. They have the most up-to-date information concerning the dog and would be happy to answer any questions about the animal.
We welcome out of state and Canadian adoptions, but we will not ship any dog via cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. If you choose transporting by either volunteers through our organization or by paid transporter, there will be an additional $55 fee added for the required Health Certificate.
We will not adopt into CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states. If you have an issue with this, you will need to take this up with your legislatures.
To understand the adoption process through AADR, please review the Adoption Information on our home page. Transportation options are outlined on that page in Step 3.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and MidWest. We just can't get them from one Coast to the other. Please look for dogs on your coast.
