BIO:  Dasher's family moved away and left him behind. A kind neighbor took him, but the landlord said no dogs, so Dasher came to rescue.

Our must-haves for this sweet boy include:

  • A fenced yard
  • No big dogs
  • No children under the age of 9 years
  • No apartments or high rises (this is firm)

Dasher is a big boy with a silly personality. He is not fat, just a bigger dachshund. His teeth were in terrible shape, so he ended up losing them all. Once his mouth has healed, he will have no problem eating dry dog food that has been soaked in a little water, which he is currently eating.

Dash would be fine as an only dog or with other small dogs. He gets along well with the senior dachshunds in his foster home and even shares a dog bed sometimes. He was living with a couple of cats and they just ignored each other. Dash is fine with children and would be happiest with older children who understand that they must be gentle with him. He rides well in a car.

Dasher loves walks around the neighborhood and gets excited when he sees his leash. He would enjoy a fenced yard to explore too.

Because he is such a good dog, Dash has not spent much time in a crate, but doesn't seem to mind it. Sometimes he goes in and naps with the door open. When nobody is home, he stays loose in the house. He is well housebroken and will use a pee pad if needed. As long as Dash goes out first thing in the morning, when foster mom gets home, and before bed, he does well. If Dash wants to go out or something else, he will bark and let you know. At night he sleeps on a dog bed near his foster mom's bed. He goes under a blanket and sleeps all night!

Dasher is a fun dog who would love to be your new best friend!

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
