Meet Alex. He is a very handsome young man and is a fine example of a sturdy, standard dachshund. Alex has the regal dachshund “prance” that is quite impressive for a little dog with such short legs. He is 4 years old and has a happy temperament, is friendly and enjoys meeting new people and gets along well with other small dogs, both male and female.  He's not been exposed to cats, so that is unknown. His personality is a little cautious and prefers to get to know you slowly. He would do well with older children who know how to treat a dog with respect and kindness. Alex has no issues and has been treated well all his life—he particularly loves men and follows his foster dad everywhere he goes.  Alex thrives on a predictable routine and daily habits. He doesn't like to be startled when sleeping (who would!?!) and snapped once at his previous mom who woke him. He enjoys walks on a leash, is obedient---well, fairly well for a doxie!--and is housetrained. He has not been trained to a crate, but stays in the den with baby gates when his mom is away. He sleeps quietly through the night in a fluffy doggy bed at night in the floor next to his foster parents. He also loves “go for rides” and is well mannered in the car and he enjoys being outside sitting on the porch and watching the world go by. He has been trained to a doggy door.

Alex is a sturdy boy, not really big, but fairly heavy for his size. With his physique, it is important to maintain a healthy weight and to provide a safe environment where Alex is not allowed to jump from furniture, beds, porches, etc. to prevent back injury. He has no known medical problems, is up-to-date on all vaccines, is neutered, and on heartworm prevention. He would do best in a home that is fairly quiet and a predictable routine and has either no children, or older children. Alex is a great boy and a joy to have around. He will make someone a loyal, loving very best friend forevever. If that person is YOU, please complete an adoption application and list Alex as the dog you would like to adopt. If you have questions or would like additional pictures, please email his foster mom at smburmei@comcast.net Alex lives in North Alabama.

Out of State and Canadian adopters are welcome. We do not ship our dogs cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE.

More about Alex

Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
