BIO:  Mikey came from East Tennessee when his owner could no longer care for him. He has suffered some from years of neglect... his teeth were neglected, he has dry eyes that may need medications for the rest of his life, and he's on special kidney care food BUT he is the kindest, gentlest, most laid-back dog you could ask for. He just goes with the flow. He doesn’t even get excited when his meal is served, but he sure likes to eat it! At first, he didn’t like dog food (he had been fed people food) but he has come to realize that he’s not going to get people food again and started eating his softened dog food, and now he chows it down. Though he is really chill, we did catch him playing a little with one of our other fosters the other day. While he is so laid-back, our wishes for him are:

  • A fenced yard
  • Another low-key smaller dog to keep him company if you are out
  • No apartments or high rises

If you are looking for a companion for your dog or dog savvy cats, then he is for you. Not demanding, laid-back, will go for slow walks… this is the guy you’ve been looking for!

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
