BIO:  Lexie was taken in by a family when her first owner died. Unfortunately, she did not like the man in the house and was very nervous and barky when he was around. They decided to surrender her to rescue so she could find a more suitable home.

Our wish list for sweet Lexie includes:

  • Fenced yard recommended
  • Continue a healthy diet to get her to her ideal weight
  • No children under the age of 10 years
  • No apartments or high rises (this is firm)

Lexie spent a little too much time getting handouts from the dinner table and needs to lose about 5 or 6 more pounds. She is doing very well with her diet and exercise program and her new owner will need to continue to help her lose weight. She lost several teeth and has been eating softened dog food, but once she has healed, she will be able to eat dry food. She is in excellent health.

Lexie is a friendly little dog. She is wary of new men but has not barked at any that we have met. She would be fine with a low-key guy in the house. She does seem to prefer women though. She was an only dog but gets along well with the 2 senior dachshunds in her foster home. She has not been around cats, but ignores the ones we see on walks, so she would probably be okay with one. She has not been around small children much but would be fine with older children who understand that they must be gentle with her.

Lexie loves going for walks around the neighborhood and also rides well in the car. She is very laid-back in the house. She will snooze in her dog bed and let you know when she needs to go out or the water bowl is getting low. At night, she has been sleeping in a crate but would prefer to sleep in a dog bed or with her people. If left for extended periods, Lexie will use a pee pad if needed. She would enjoy a fenced yard but would be okay with several trips outside and walks instead.

Lexie is a good natured, low-maintenance little sweetie-pie who would love to be your new buddy!

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
