BIO:  Hershey is an adorable Chihuahua/Dachshund mix. He was surrendered to a small rural shelter because his owner had too many dogs. Our must haves for this little guy include:

  • A fenced yard
  • No kids under the age of 10 years
  • No apartments or high rises (this is firm)

Hershey is very shy when he is around new people, but with a little kindness he will become your shadow. He would be okay with children 10 and up as long as they give him time to get to know them. He gets along well with other small dogs, but is afraid of big dogs. He would love a fenced yard and another small friendly dog to play with. He would also be fine as an only dog as long as he gets plenty of attention. Hershey is doing very well with his housetraining and uses a pee pad if he can't get outside. He is laid back around the house and is always ready to go for walk. He enjoys strolls around the neighborhood and rides in the car. At night Hershey has been sleeping quietly in a crate, but would be very happy to sleep with his people.

Hershey is a handsome little fellow who would love to be your special pal!

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
