BIO:  Higgins has not had a good life up until he came into rescue. He was dumped in a shelter in East Tennessee not once but twice. We're not sure why the first time but the second time, the family lost everything due to the pandemic and they were living out of their car. This is what we want for Higgins for his third and FINAL home:

  • A fenced yard
  • Another older male or female for him to hang with
  • No apartments or high rises
  • And a promise that this will be his LAST home

Higgins is a sweet, sweet boy and is very low key. He spends most of his day laying either out in the sun or in a doggie bed. The only time you may hear him is when he knows it’s time for dinner.

Sadly when we got Higgins he had nasty teeth and they all had to be removed because of dental disease. We also found out that his jaw was broken from one of the teeth that was pulled or from disease before we got him. While it’s not bothering him at all it is suggested that he have NO hard food or treat of any kind. So it’s softened hard food or canned food for him the rest of his life. He’s not bothered by the broken jaw and doesn’t complain because he has to have canned.

Because this boy is so sweet, he so deserves a last forever home that will care for him and give him the love he deserves. Please make that home yours. If you have any questions, please contact the foster mom at her email address. Make him and yourself feel good... adopt him!

============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ==============

If you have questions about this dog, please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed above.  They have the most up-to-date information concerning the dog and would be happy to answer any questions about the animal.

We welcome out of state and Canadian adoptions, but we will not ship any dog via cargo.  You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport.  If you choose transporting by either volunteers through our organization or by paid transporter, there will be an additional $45 fee added for the required Health Certificate.

We will not adopt into CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states.  If you have an issue with this, you need to take this up with your legislatures.

To understand the adoption process through AADR, please review the Adoption Information on our home page.  Transportation options are outlined on that page in Step 3.

If you are interested in adopting this Dachshund please review Read Before You Adopt and then you can complete an Application.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and MidWest. We just can't get them from one Coast to the other but some day we hope to have enough volunteers to do that as well.  For now, please look for dogs on your coast.

More about Higgins in AL

Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
