BIO (7/28/2019):  This gorgeous pup, Gabe, is from a hoarding situation in East Tennessee.  He is a handsome little guy and wants nothing more than to be loved.  He has a great personality once he gets to know and trust you.  Gabe is doing well in his foster home and when he decided he could trust them, he really opened up and is showing his sweet puppy side.

Gabe started out hiding under beds and bushes for most of the day to slowly peeking out to see his fosters, to finally not making a mad dash for something to hide under when he was approached.  He is still a little skittish, but he really wants to be loved, so he is working on his self-confidence and trust in humans.  When Gabe does get overwhelmed and hides, he doesn’t mind being picked up and carried back into society and has no aggression even when he feels threatened.  He is inquisitive and smart and quickly picked up using the doggie door and bed ramp.  He has also shown interest in a food ball (you put dry food in it so they can roll it around getting exercise and slowing down their eating pace) which keeps him entertained and roaming around new places instead of hiding.  Gabe loves treats and entertains himself with the funny sounds from squeaky toys.  He likes to find all of them and collect them in his crate.

Gabe likes sleeping in the big bed with his human, but also likes the freedom of having the option of sleeping in a dog bed on the floor.  He holds his pee all night and hasn’t had any accidents in the house.  He does have to be coaxed to stay outside as he prefers the safety of indoors, but he will roam around sniffing things if you are outside with him.

Gabe needs a home with another pup who can help with his continued socialization.

While it seems he may have had a rough start to life, with enough love and time for you to earn his trust, Gabe will be an amazing addition to a small family with considerate, 8 years old+ children and a fence.  He has already stolen our hearts!

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
