She gets along with all the dogs here including the puppy that she likes to play with. BUT she loves to sit in your lap or cuddle up under the covers at night next to you in bed. She appears to be housebroken at least to a doggie door. She does fine on a leash and is very laid back and for that reason we think she would be fine with kids under 5 and with cats. She just wants to get and give love. She also rides well in a car and is ok in a crate when you leave the house. AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
