KATIE BEING FOSTERED IN CLARKSVILLE, TN
Katie is a sweet 4 year old black and tan dachshund.
She weighs 10 pounds and is vaccinated, spayed and on heartworm prevention and Flea control. Katie is recovering from a minor hernia surgery from an incompleted spay from when she was little and will be ready for adoption by mid August. She was surrendered by the original owners that purchased her from a breeder b/c they were moving into a new house and didn’t want a dog anymore. We were told she couldn’t be housetrained but within 5 days with a lot of patience and total commitment to a schedule she was housetrained and hasn’t had any accidents in almost a week. Katie needs to be placed with children over the age of 12 that are NOT rambunctious or rough around animals in any way. She is timid around young children and other dogs and cats. We feel she was probably abused physically as she will lay down on her back and submit when she feels fear or threatened. She does well with the foster homes non threatening dachshund and has recently started to play and really show us what a great little player she is. She is VERY VERY affectionate and a TOTAL lap dog. She loves to sleep under the covers and cuddle until you are ready to get up for the day.
Katie is an absolute sweetie of a dachshund and will require a VERY patient home to integrate her into a new environment. She warms up slowly but is overly anxious to please. When she is acting fearful her foster home ignores that submissive behavior in order to give her confidence and she is doing very well.
Her potential adopter must be willing to take the time to housetrain her again as we feel she may regress a little bit when moved from her foster home. She will go in a crate but hates being in there and will bark and bark to be let out. We feel she spent a good deal of time in a crate and we don’t put her in there unless we leave the house.
Katie will make a great companion for a home with no other animals or one other dachshund that is not too alpha.
Out of state and Canadian adoptions are welcome. We have several transporters that for a fee will bring the dog as close to you as possible up the Eastern seaboard. A home visit is required on all adoptions. We also micro chip all our dogs and must pass the cost on to the adopter. It is only $10.00. Thank you for your interest in a rescue. To fill out an application for this dog please go to www.ssdr.org and fill out an app. we will be in touch shortly to do a phone interview. It is also best to have a dog in mind that you would like to adopt or if you don't please let us know that you'd like a dog that best fits your lifestyle.
More about KATIE....OH
Is Not Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
