BIO UPDATE (4/7/19):  Hi folks, Iris here!  Thought I’d give my foster mom a break and write my own update!  Well, I went back to the dental specialist and passed with flying colors.  Of course, why wouldn’t everything be perfect?!?  AADR had my teeth taken care of by the dentist who works on the animals at Disney World!  My doc was AWESOME (and handsome).  He works on gorillas and elephants, but also little dogs like me.  He said I can eat whatever I want, but my foster mom said “Whoa” since doxies have to have measured portions to keep our weight under control.  She still softens my kibble ‘cause she has gotten used to doing that for me.  She loves me lots!

Great news... now that I’m done with my dental work, I can look for an adopter outside of FL.  But, I still want a SOUTHERN family since my coat is quite thin.  And, you have to promise to have sweaters and jackets for me when it gets chilly.  I am not a kisser, but I sure love to being close to you.  I love the warmth of your body!  Don’t you want a sweet little girl to spoil?!?

BIO (3/4/19):  Looking for a lap buddy?  Here she is!  Iris is sweeter then sweet!  She’s a little shy at first, but once she is comfortable in your home, she’ll be your best buddy for sure.  She very quickly learned the routine in her foster home.  She gets along great with her four foster siblings (male and females).  Iris was surrendered by a breeder so she is used to being with other dogs.  If you don’t have another dog, it is probably best if you are home a good part of the day to avoid the possibility of separation anxiety.

Look carefully at Iris’s pics...she is a very unusual color...blue and tan.  When Iris was three years old she developed Alopecia which means she has a very thin coat on most of her body and, in fact, barely any hair in some places.  This is a very common occurrence in blue dachshunds.  We are currently adding some Omega-3 oil and a Melatonin tablet to her food twice daily.  The vet feels this may help her coat, but it will take several months to know for sure.  Because Iris gets cold very easily, AADR is looking for a family in Florida to adopt her.

Iris recently had dental surgery and 16 teeth including her upper canines had to be extracted.  Iris will need to go back to the dental specialist in Wesley Chapel on March 28th for her re-check.  She only has 3 remaining teeth so while her gums heal, we need to soften her food.  She is eating like a champ and LOVES meal time!  So we’ve been carefully monitoring her food consumption since doxies can easily gain weight.  When Iris came into rescue, she was almost 3 pounds overweight.  She is now at her ideal weight of 10.5 pounds.

If you live in FL, are looking for a cuddle buddy, are home a lot, and want the sweetest little girl to love, then fill out an application today from the left hand column.  Have questions?  You can contact Iris’ foster mom.  This tiny baby will bring you so much JOY!  Oh, and BTW, unless you know her birthday, you’d NEVER guess her age.  She doesn’t look or act like an 11 year old doxie!  She looks like a puppy and has the cutest butt wiggle when she walks...absolutely ADORABLE!!!

Good with Dogs, Good with Older/Considerate Kids Only, Good with Adults, Leashtrained, Cratetrained, Affectionate

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
