BIO:  Hi everyone, my name is Hershey!  AADR saved me from a shelter.  My family was moving and they left me there.  I’m not sure why.  I am a very good dog!

My dream family would be someone who is retired or works from home and can spend the day adoring me and playing with me.  If that is not possible, I would like someone who can take me to work with them some of the time!

I am a little taller than your average dachshund, so I can run really, really fast - and I do!  I can walk up and down steps with relative ease, although I prefer to be carried.

I have been in my foster home for a few months now and nobody -- and I mean nobody -- can understand why I get overlooked.  Maybe it’s my frosty face.  What’s a little gray…hey, think George Clooney!  I am suave, sophisticated, and have A LOT of joy in my heart and spring in my step!  Foster Mom (FM) said I am 7-years-young and rambunctious!

I know my name and answer to it.  I generally come when I am called.  I like my food, and I like treats, but what I really, really like are my humans!  I want them to love on me all the time, I especially love belly rubs!

FM started working with me on my social skills as soon as I arrived, and she said we have made great progress!  I am a good boy!  I need a family who will continue to help me with my manners.  I have caught on to the walking-on-the-leash thing but I must have a snug harness for walking; a collar is just not secure enough.  I am an excellent runner, and I don't want to get lost!

I need to have a securely fenced yard, because I am a little insecure since being left in the shelter, and if I get frightened, I might bolt.  I prefer for my human to go outside with me, even in the fenced yard.  Although I am housebroken, I may have an accident or two in the beginning.  FM says that I am “crate trained”, we will discuss that in a minute...

I don't need to run to the door when the bell rings, I'm very laid-back.  I don’t bark very much, and I am generally very quiet.

Having a fur-sibling or two is OK with me.  I get along well with my male and female foster siblings.  I haven’t met any bigger dogs or cats, so I’m not sure if I like them or not.

I have a few requirements of my new family:

Firstly:  I. Do. Not. Like. My. Crate.  Am I clear here?  In the morning I hide to avoid the crate.  FM has to find me, carry me to my crate, and put me in.  I would prefer to be left out of the crate altogether.  I am a good boy and have not demonstrated any destructive tendencies.  I do not chew anything that is not a dog bone or dog toy.

Secondly:  I must sleep in the Big Bed - this is a non-negotiable.  Without getting into the specifics of it all, FM tried very hard to train me to sleep in my crate at night.  No dice.  I. Do. Not. Like. My. Crate (see first item).  That having been said, I am a very considerate bed-partner.  I don't fidget, I don't like to be under the covers, I don't steal the covers, and once I have settled down for the night I don't move around.  I will lay wherever you put my little bed and blanket.  I like something soft, like a pillow, and a fluffy fleece blanket of my own to sleep with.  I hop into my bed; arrange my blanket; wait for my evening belly rubs; and when the lights go out, I go straight to sleep - no fuss, no muss, and no fooling around.  I LOVE my humans and I feel safe with them in the big bed.  If you are in bed with me, no one can sneak in and dog-nap me in the middle of the night and leave me at a shelter or anything like that.

Thirdly:  I have learned to walk on my leash and I love to be outside on our walks with the sun shining on my face!  I like you to talk to me while we walk - even if we have a fenced yard, I prefer you to go outside with me and talk to me tell me I'm a good boy and talk about the trees, grass, squirrels, and bunnies.  I like the sound of my human's voice.  You can talk to me 24/7, I'd be good with that.

Fourthly:  Have I mentioned how much I love my humans?  I love to be adored!  I love cuddles, and belly-rubs, and generally being loved on.  I love belly-rubs the best!  I should be supervised with children under 10 years old.  They can be a little unpredictable and sometimes don't know how to communicate with a smart guy like me.  FM says that doxies have idiosyncrasies, so we need to be with adults and respectful children who understand us.  Having said that, FM has six grandchildren between the ages of 1 and 12.  They all love me and play with me!  They are very respectful of my space, and if I don't want to play anymore, they let me be.  I can handle kids like that.

Lastly:  You must take me for rides.  I love to ride in the car!  I like to see and experience new things.  I am a great co-pilot and I bet I could even drive that thing.  I just want to be with you wherever you go!

If you have any specific questions about me, please e-mail my FM.  She is very happy to talk to people about me.  If you think I would make a good addition to your family, please fill out an application.

Hope to hear from you soon, Hershey

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
