BIO UPDATE (5/5/2018):  And now a few words from the little Houdini himself:

So, Foster Mom (FM) took me to a friend's house, where there is a securely fenced yard.  She wanted my foster siblings and I to be able to run and play because it is such a nice day!  She measured me and measured the fence.  Then she went all around the yard to check for gaps.  She didn't find any.

Guess what...I escaped.  I got out of my harness AND my collar, and I escaped.  Tee-Hee!!  Luckily, I only escaped into the next door neighbor's fenced yard.  These neighbors knew my FM too, so they sent me right back through the fence.  Then I had to wear my leash...so did my foster siblings because 1 of them went with me.

I am a real Houdini.  FM can't figure out how I got out of my harness and collar.  They both fit snugly, but I did it.

This is why I am in rescue.  I need a family who will always keep track of me, even in a securely fenced yard!

BIO Update from Doc (4/3/2018):  Hi everyone, it’s me again, Doc!  I’ve been with my Foster Family for two months now.  Foster Mom (FM) said she is very proud of me.  I had a rocky start (you can check out my history below), but I am learning about family, manners, and playing.  I am getting really good at being part of the “pack” (that’s “family” to you humans).  I have figured out how to walk on the leash without tripping FM.  She said it is very important to NOT trip your human; sometimes she has no sense of adventure!  I have figured out that I am safe here, and I don’t try to escape.  FM is still super careful with me around opened doors, given my history as a Houdini-wanna-be.

I am an excellent hunter.  I like to chase all types of critters.  I can spot squirrels a block away and I chase them right up the tree!  I sit at the base of the tree and I call them, but they don’t come back down.  FM said it is good manners to come when you are called.  I guess the squirrels don’t have good manners.  Anyway, FM said I need to mind my own manners and not anyone else’s and mine are getting better and better!  I come when I am called (usually).  When FM or FD want to pick me up, I don’t run away anymore.  When it is mealtime, I wait patiently (sort-of) for my food to be placed in front of me.  I am learning to play with and share toys.  I am good in my crate when no one is home, and I am able to wait to do my business, but we must go straight outside when the humans get home.  I have had a few accidents in the house.  Let’s just say that the manners are a work in progress.

I have also found my voice!  I bark sometimes, but not too frequently.  I do not respond to the doorbell.  I just hang out on the sofa and let someone else get the door.  None of my friends are tall enough to reach the doorbell, so I figure it’s not for me.  I howl when you put me in my crate and leave for work, so I may not be a good apartment dweller.  I growl when I want to be picked up and loved on, and I still talk in my sleep!

My most favorite time of the day is when the humans are sitting on the sofa with me.  I love to snuggle!  I love to get kissed, and petted, and get my belly rubbed (I love that best, I think)!  I myself am not a kisser, but I like it when the humans kiss me.  FM said I am “coming out of my shell” and I will do anything to get loved on.

I know my updates are sorta long, but I have so much to say!  I am learning how to be a pet!  I am learning what it means to be loved just because I am me!  FM says she will find the bestest ever forever home for me!  Do you think you could love me forever??

BIO Update from Doc (3/1/2018):  Hi, it's me, Doc!  Foster Mom (FM) said I'm coming along nicely!  She said that once I get to know you, I'm a total love bug.  I love to snuggle all the time, and am an attention hog.  I am always trying to get loved on!

I like chewing toys like NylaBones!  I don't usually chew things I'm not supposed to - except the fur collar on FM's coat - it was REAL fur!  I didn't know I wasn't supposed to kill it.  She was a pretty good sport about it though.  She said family members apologize and the other family member accepts the apology.  I still feel a little bad.

I'm good car passenger, but I need to be in a crate because otherwise I will wander all over the car and try to sit in your lap or get under your feet.  FM said it's not safe to do that...sometimes she is no fun at all!

BIO Update from Doc (2/19/18):  Foster Mom says it is super-important that I learn to be a family member. That means I have had to work on my communication skills.  I'm still a pretty quiet guy.  When I want your attention, I begin by quietly sitting in your field of vision; if that doesn't work, I move onto a low "purr"; if you still haven't taken notice of me, I growl a bit; if you STILL haven't noticed me, I bark incessantly until you respond to me and I get what I'm after.  FM says I am persistent.  She said we need to refine my communication skills... whatever that means!

I have started walking around the house wagging my tail instead of keeping it tucked underneath me.  FM says I'm making progress with my confidence.  Loud noises or raised voices make me afraid.  I am still considered a "flight risk", so I'm not allowed near any doors when they are going to be opened.

I'm doing great walking on a leash, too!  I still have an occasional "accident", but I'm getting better, FM said so!

That’s all for now.  Check back, I’ll keep you updated…Doc

BIO:  Hi, I’m Doc #4!  I was originally adopted from a shelter in Alabama.  When I didn’t get along with the children in the house and I supposedly had some potty training issues, I was given away to someone else.  I’m a regular “Houdini”, and repeatedly escaped from an insecurely fenced yard.  So, then I turned up on Facebook as a give-away.  A friend of the rescue saw me, and here I am!

I arrived in Bethlehem, PA in a snow storm.  I’ve never seen snow, and I don’t think I’m too fond of it!  My three foster fur-siblings are being pretty nice to me so far.  Foster Mom (FM) said she is going to work really hard to find me the bestest fur-ever home in the whole wide world, with a family to call my very own!  A family that will love me fur-ever!

FM asked what I wanted all of you to know about me.  I am 5-years-old, and a bit shy.  I know my name and answer to it, if I feel like it.  I need to take my time getting to know you.  Once I know I can trust you, I will be as loyal as can be!  FM says we are working on my social skills and my self-confidence.  I need a family who will continue to help me with that too.  I am catching on to the walking-on-the-leash thing.  I must have a harness for walking since I have a tendency to bolt if I am frightened; a collar is just not secure enough.  I need to have a securely fenced yard, due to my exceptional escape skills.  I prefer for my human to go outside with me, even in the fenced yard.  Although I am technically “housebroken”, I have had a few accidents in the house.  FM said she thinks it is a combination of my being in a new place with new people and the fact that the weather is snowy, icy, cold, and wet.  FM says that I am “crate trained”.  I am a couch potato, and I love to snuggle on the sofa with my human while wrapped in my favorite soft blankie.  I prefer to sleep in the big bed with my humans, I feel safe there with them.  Although my crate is okay during the day while FM and FD are at work, I do not like sleeping in my crate at night.

I am a very laid-back, quiet guy.  I don’t bark or growl, but I do snore a little and I talk in my sleep!  I am open to the idea of having a fur-sibling or two.  I haven’t met any bigger dogs or cats, so I’m not sure if I like them or not.

Foster Mom will post updates as we get to know each other better.  Please feel free to e-mail her with any questions you may have about me!

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
